A portable air conditioner is only portable inside the limits of its hose, window kit, drain and power cord. If the exhaust cannot be sealed to a permitted window, a larger cooling number will not rescue the setup.

The buy or stop fit gate
- The kit matches the window type and dimensions.
- The exhaust reaches with a short, straight route.
- The opening can be sealed without unapproved alteration.
- A wall power point is within the cord length.
- Drainage and noise are workable.
- Hinged, louvred or security-screen window has no verified kit.
- Installation needs screws, cutting or uncertain adhesive.
- The hose must kink, stretch or cross a walkway.
- An extension lead appears necessary.
- The drain would run across flooring or outdoors improperly.
Know the single-duct compromise
A common portable unit cools room air and exhausts collected heat outside through one duct. Australian Government Energy Rating guidance says this lowers pressure in the room and draws warmer air back from elsewhere. Single-duct models therefore show no stars on the Zoned Energy Rating Label. Double-duct portables can achieve more than zero stars.
This does not mean you feel no cool air. It means whole-room efficiency is poor compared with systems that keep the hot side outside. Use the government's annual energy figure and capacity data to compare exact portable models.
Measure the complete window path
| Measure | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Opening direction and clear opening | Sliding kits may not fit casement, awning, louvre or unusual windows. |
| Panel span | The supplied slider has a minimum and maximum length. |
| Unit-to-window distance | The hose must reach without stretching, sharp bends or compression. |
| Floor and wall clearance | Intakes and outlets need the manual's clearance. |
| Power-cord route | The appliance should reach a suitable wall outlet without an extension lead. |
| Security and weather | The panel must not create an unsafe opening or allow rain and pests inside. |
Photograph and measure the window. Then check the exact manual for kit parts, hose diameter, panel range, clearance and installation method. A generic retailer image is not enough.
If the panel needs screws, adhesive, cutting or a screen alteration, ask for written approval under the RTA fixture process. Body corporate rules can also matter. Never block an exit or defeat a security feature.
Size the room, then check the product's assumptions
Measure length × width for floor area and note ceiling height. Add challenges such as west-facing glass, poor shading, top-floor heat, open doorways, cooking heat and several occupants. Use manufacturer sizing only if it states the tested area and conditions, and be cautious with very large room claims.
Cooling capacity is shown in kW. Do not compare that with electrical input power as if they are the same number. A larger unit can still perform poorly if the window leaks or the room is open to the rest of the dwelling.
The compressor is in the room
Unlike a split system, a portable unit keeps the compressor indoors. Compare published sound levels in dB(A), the mode and measurement conditions. A quiet or sleep figure at low fan speed may not show the sound during maximum cooling.
Think in activities: conversation, television, calls and sleep. Tonal hum, cycling and airflow can matter as much as one decibel number. If possible, hear the exact model or use a return policy that clearly permits a suitable trial.
Humidity becomes water
Portable air conditioners remove some moisture while cooling. Depending on design and conditions, water may be reused, collected in a tank or sent through a drain hose. Read how often the tank can fill in humid weather, whether the unit stops when full and what is required before moving or storing it.
A continuous drain needs a safe downhill route to an appropriate drain. Do not run water across a floor, through an unapproved hole or where it can affect another property.
Calculate with your tariff, not a generic headline
rated input power in kW × hours used × your usage tariff in dollars per kWhExample method: 1.2 kW × 6 hours × $0.32 per kWh = $2.30 for that use period, rounded.Use the rated input from the exact model and tariff from your bill. Actual cycling, fan mode, heat, humidity and window leakage change consumption. The Energy Rating calculator can compare registered air conditioners using postcode, climate and tariff inputs.
Power safety: Follow the manual and plug the unit directly into a suitable wall outlet. Queensland's Electrical Safety Office says extension leads are temporary equipment, ventilation openings must stay clear and damaged cords or plugs should not be used.
A model-neutral shortlist sheet
| Field | Where to verify |
|---|---|
| Exact model and duct type | Rating plate, product page, manual and Energy Rating record. |
| Cooling capacity and input power | Energy label, rating plate and manual. |
| Window panel range and type | Manual parts list and installation section. |
| Hose length and diameter | Manual, not a category page. |
| Noise by mode | Tested or declared dB(A) with mode stated. |
| Water handling | Tank, auto-evaporation, drain and full-tank behaviour. |
| Weight and warranty | Product page and written warranty terms. |
| Running-cost inputs | Rated kW, planned hours and your current tariff. |
Before buying, compare the portable option with fans, shading and any supplied air conditioning already at the property. If the included system is faulty, use the Queensland repairs guide rather than buying around an unresolved repair.
Frequently asked questions
Can I run a portable air conditioner without the exhaust hose?
Not for effective air conditioning. Heat must be exhausted outside through the system the manual specifies.
Why do single-duct portable air conditioners show zero stars?
Energy Rating says they draw warmer replacement air back into the room and are inefficient at cooling the room.
How do I estimate running cost?
Multiply rated input power in kW by hours used and your usage tariff in dollars per kWh.
Do I need permission for a window kit?
If the method attaches a fixture or alters the premises, use the RTA Form 23 process and check body corporate rules.
The practical bottom line
Do not shortlist by room-size claim alone. Prove window fit, approval, exhaust route, power, drainage and noise first. Then compare exact-model capacity, energy and cost evidence.
