A free box is good value only if it survives the move. A delivered bundle is convenient only if its sizes suit your belongings. Reusable crates can reduce tape and waste, but their return deadline becomes part of moving day. Start with the job each container must do.

HybridMost renter movesRequires a room-by-room plan before ordering

For many moves, a hybrid is the practical answer: sturdy small cartons for books and pantry items, medium cartons for mixed household goods, a few specialty containers for clothing or fragile items, and free cartons for soft or low-risk belongings.

Count the job before counting boxes

Generic estimates based on the number of bedrooms can overbuy or underbuy because households store very different amounts. Walk through each room and list the type of container, not just a total box number.

Room-by-room box plan
  • Books, tools and pantry goods: smaller strong cartons so the finished load remains manageable.
  • Kitchen breakables: consistent cartons with enough space for protection around every item.
  • Linen, cushions and clothing: larger cartons for bulky but lighter contents.
  • Hanging clothes: compare wardrobe cartons with bags or folded packing.
  • Televisions, artwork and mirrors: use purpose-fit protection and check what a removalist will accept.
  • First-night essentials: one clearly identifiable container that travels with you.

Add a modest buffer only after the room count. Check whether a bundle includes useful small and medium cartons or inflates the total with sizes you will not use. Tape, labels, paper, protective wrap and delivery can change the real price.

Free and used boxes: inspect before you load

Ask permission before collecting cartons from a shop, office, neighbour or community group. Availability is unpredictable, so begin early and avoid relying on a single collection day.

Keep the box when
  • It is dry, clean and free of strong odours.
  • The corners and base hold their shape.
  • The cardboard is not soft, crushed or deeply creased.
  • The size suits the intended load.
  • Old labels can be removed or covered clearly.
Reject the box when
  • It has moisture marks, mould, grease or pest evidence.
  • The bottom has been retaped repeatedly.
  • It carried chemicals, raw food or another contaminant.
  • It is too large for the dense items you plan to pack.
  • It will not stack securely with the rest of the load.

Used purpose-made moving cartons may be more consistent than mixed retail boxes, but inspect their old folds and handles. Reinforcing a sound base is different from trying to rescue cardboard that has lost its structure.

New boxes delivered in Brisbane

Delivered kits trade money for predictable sizes and less collection time. Compare the delivered total rather than the headline bundle price.

  • Check the delivery postcode, fee, minimum order and available delivery window.
  • Read the actual carton dimensions and board specification, not only labels such as small or book box.
  • Check whether tape, labels and protective materials are useful inclusions or items you already own.
  • Confirm return or refund terms for unused flat boxes.
  • Check whether specialty boxes fit the items they claim to protect.

If a removalist is booked, ask what carton sizes and packing standards work with its equipment and insurance terms. Queensland Government removalist guidance recommends confirming what packing and unpacking are included, recording an inventory, photographing items and numbering cartons.

Reusable moving crates

Plastic moving crates are hired rather than owned. They can stack consistently, need little or no tape and avoid disposing of a large cardboard pile. They also create a fixed deadline: unpacking must be complete before collection or extra hire charges may apply.

Check the hire terms
  • Total hire period and how days are counted.
  • Delivery and collection postcodes, fees and access requirements.
  • Crate dimensions, carrying capacity and empty weight.
  • Extension price and how to request extra time.
  • Missing, dirty or damaged crate charges.
  • Whether dollies, labels or cable ties are included.
  • Cleaning expectations and prohibited contents.

Consumer guarantees generally apply when household goods are hired, although ownership-related guarantees differ because the renter does not own the crates. Keep the booking confirmation, condition photos and collection record.

Compare the full cost

Cardboard totalboxes + tape + labels + protection + delivery or collection travel - value of reusable boxes keptInclude your time only if it changes the decision, such as several collection trips during a tight move.
Crate-hire totalhire package + delivery + collection + likely extension risk + optional equipmentDo not include a refundable deposit as a final cost unless part may reasonably be retained.

Compare the two totals for the same capacity and move dates. A cheap cardboard bundle may still win for a long unpacking period. Crates may win when the move is local, access is straightforward and the household can unpack promptly.

Pack for lifting, stacking and finding

  1. Keep dense items in smaller boxes. A carton that can physically hold many books may become unsafe or impractical to move.
  2. Build the base correctly. Follow the box or crate instructions and use suitable tape where required.
  3. Fill voids without overfilling. Contents should not move freely, but the top should close flat for stacking.
  4. Label more than the room. Add a carton number and a short contents description. Mark fragile items accurately.
  5. Keep an inventory. Queensland Government guidance recommends numbering cartons and photographing items and boxes when using a removalist.
  6. Plan the carry path. Keep exits clear and use help or equipment for heavy, awkward or repetitive loads.

WorkSafe Queensland identifies high force, repetitive movement and awkward posture as characteristics of hazardous manual tasks. Although its duties guidance is written for workplaces, the risk factors are useful reminders for a household move.

Reuse or recycle after the move

Offer sound moving cartons for reuse while they are still dry and flat. Brisbane City Council lists corrugated and removalist boxes as recyclable paper and cardboard. Clean non-waxed cardboard can go in the yellow-lid recycling stream, subject to the current Council instructions and available bin space.

Brisbane resource recovery centres also accept residential quantities of cardboard and paper. Council instructs visitors to flatten cardboard boxes and separate materials. Remove plastic wrap, foam and other packing materials and check the current disposal route for each material rather than putting everything inside one carton.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I get free moving boxes in Brisbane?

Ask local retailers, workplaces, neighbours or community groups before collection. Inspect each carton and reject boxes that are damp, contaminated, crushed or too weak for the load.

Are reusable moving crates cheaper than cardboard boxes?

They can be when the move is local and unpacking is quick. Compare the full hire, delivery, collection, extension and damage terms against the complete cardboard cost.

Can moving boxes go in Brisbane recycling?

Brisbane City Council accepts clean non-waxed cardboard in the yellow-lid recycling stream and accepts cardboard at resource recovery centres. Flatten boxes and separate non-cardboard packing materials.

How many moving boxes do I need?

Count possessions room by room and match carton size to weight. Add a small buffer after that count instead of relying only on the number of bedrooms.

The practical bottom line

Use free and used boxes selectively, buy new boxes where consistency protects the load, and hire crates only when the return schedule works. The best-value system is the one that survives the move, fits the vehicle and does not leave you paying for containers you cannot use.
